Mick Jagger and Tilda Swinton join calls for new law to protect Venice

Open letter signed by 21 high-profile personalities after news that cruise ship will sail past St Mark’s Square

A host of famous personalities including the Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger, and the actor Tilda Swinton have supported an appeal urging the Italian government to introduce a special law to safeguard Venice.

Tourists have started to return to the lagoon city since Italy eased coronavirus travel restrictions in mid-May. But residents and those with close links to the city do not want it to return to its pre-pandemic status – when it was overwhelmed by daytrippers and giant cruise ships that wreaked havoc on its fragile lagoon.
