Home Office’s Victoria Atkins says force should be held to account but avoids calling for Cressida Dick to quit

A Home Office minister has resisted immediate calls for the head of the Metropolitan police to resign over the handling of a vigil for Sarah Everard, urging people to wait for “explanations” from Scotland Yard for officers’ behaviour.

Victoria Atkins said images of police arresting women who paid tribute to the 33-year-old in Clapham, south London, on Saturday evening were “very upsetting”.
